The 6th graders in Mrs. Lynch's class voted!

The 6th graders in Mrs. Lynch's class voted to have a walk/run during school hours to raise money for their service learning project. Mrs. Norman's class will vote this week. I am going to incorporate Facebook as a means to advertise for our walk/run to demonstrate to students how Facebook can be used as an educational tool.  The students started journaling their plans on how to set up this fundraiser.  The work for this project will be done during guidance classes and the students are really motivated to help others by this type of project service learning.  6th graders also journal about the Good/Bad/and the Ugly in class so they are learning to be reflective practitioners and problem solvers.  (it is also a good way to manage thoughts and or stress)

Here are the standards/benchmarks my other guidance classes are working on:
Kindergarten:  ps:a1.6  distinguish between appropriate/inappropriate behaviors- Kelly Bear puppet
First- ps:a1.5  identify/express feelings- using I Care Cat (puppet) songs/hands are for helping not hurting
2nd- cps:1/11  learn coping skills for managing life events- use Feelings booklets to learn how to handle our feelings and strategies to handle anger
3rd- c:a 2.8  understand the importance of responsibility/dependability, punctuality, integrity of the workplace.  CEI- teacher helps students to set goals/ Story lessons on how to be successful in school-test taking, organization of materials, listening skills
4th ps:b1/6  know how to apply conflict resolution skills
*collaboration
5th-cps:cl.10  learn techniques for managing stress & conflict/ story lessons to practice conflict resolution skills
6th- c:a1/5  learn to make decisions/service learning projects/ CEI: Cooperative L. capitalizes on student interest/offers choices/student recording/thoughts/ reflecting

All of the grades 4-6th are practicing conflict resolution managers.  The students are skilled at being mediators and solving their own conflicts.  Unless it is with a bully and then an adult is needed to help mediate the conflict.

My goal this week is to post a video of the students working on their service learning project and using collaborative skills.  Our song of the month- Oct. is Talk it Out by Kids Rock album while the students learn the tango!

FIRST GRADE is the best!
I also teach a small guided reading class and this week we are going to start reading plays for fluency.  We are going to begin with The Very Hungry Caterpillar- (the life cycle)  I will try to get a video of the first graders reading this also.  They are so fun to work with and love to read.  I know all of you read with your children because it is so important.  Have a good week.
